Commencement Etiquette

Commencement is a significant and solemn event, the recognition of years of study. To make it more meaningful to all, guests and participants are requested to avoid all unnecessary conversation and movement during the exercises. Degree candidates are expected to remain in their seats throughout the entire ceremony, except when they approach the stage to receive their diploma cover. Alcohol is not to be brought on campus, and food is not allowed in the seating area. Refrain from using cell phones and/or pagers. Please note that only authorized photographers and University staff are permitted on the stage area during the ceremony.

Degree Candidate Seating

As you enter Sunken Garden, University staff will direct you to your seat. Please do not leave any empty spaces, and once in a row do not attempt to move to another seat. Remain standing until the conclusion of the Invocation. As you sit, fold your hood neatly onto your lap. If you have a special need that prevents you from using the steps in Regent's Terrace or walking the distance between Gersten Pavilion and Sunken Garden, please notify the Office of the Registrar by Friday, March 31.

Degree Conferral

When your college, school, or department is announced, please stand. Make sure the tassel on your cap is to the right.  CARRY YOUR HOOD OVER YOUR RIGHT ARM, AND BE SURE THAT IT IS COMPLETELY UNFASTENED. Proceed to the stage area via the center aisle one row at a time. Present the name card to the Dean or Director, who will announce your name as it is on the card. University staff will assist you in handing your hood to the Academic Vice President, who will place it over your head. He will not be able to place it over your head if your hood is buttoned. You will then walk across the stage to the President and the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, shake their hands, and receive your diploma cover. Please return to your seat via the side aisle. Remain in your seats until the ceremony is finished. Please leave the ceremony exiting row by row as directed by University staff.
