Class Notes
1952
Colleen Cunnane Purves [LibArts] graduated from Marymount College
and was the first woman to receive a secondary teaching credential
from Loyola University while it was still an all-male university.
She and her husband, Dean Lewis Purves [SciEng ?54], celebrated
their 50th anniversary this past year. After raising seven children
while traveling throughout the United States as an Air Force
family, they are now settled in Lander, Wyo. The couple also has
four grandchildren and one great-grandson.
1970
Felino Bautista [SciEng] continues his career with Raytheon in
Fullerton, Calif. He has put two children through college and is
working on a third: Stacy graduated from LMU in 2000 and is now at
Loyola of Chicago studying philosophy; Cara graduated from
University of California, Berkeley in 2004; and Brian finished his
first year at the University of California, Irvine.
Harold Brooks [LibArts] accepted an invitation to
serve on the LMU Board of Regents. Currently, Harold serves as the
CEO of the Bay Area Chapter of the American Red Cross. He also
serves as an executive director on the board of the African
American Alumni Association.
Hon. Irma Brown Dillon [LibArts, JD ?73], a
former regent of Loyola Marymount University, accepted an
invitation to serve on the LMU Board of Trustees. Judge Brown also
served as the keynote speaker for this year?s Kente Graduation at
LMU and serves as an executive director on the board of the African
American Alumni Association.
1971
Kathleen (Gilroy) Desmond [LibArts] has accepted the nomination to
serve on the Alumni Association Board of Directors.
1973
Peter Gannon [BusAdm] was appointed an assistant sheriff in Santa
Ana, Calif. In his new post, Peter oversees field operations. With
a $175 million budget and 1,300 employees, his division is bigger
than many municipal police departments.
Hon. Steven Rhodes [BusAdm] was appointed to the
California Community College Board of Governors by Gov. Arnold
Schwarzenegger in April 2004. Steven also serves as an executive
director on the board of the African American Alumni
Association.
1974
Constance Dunn-Weinmaster [MA] co-authored a novel, The Dangling
Umbilical Cord, with her husband, Mark. The book is a psychological
thriller in the mystery genre and was published by Publish America
in Frederick, Md.
Neal Schmale [JD] is the executive vice president
and chief financial officer of Sempra Energy and has been elected
to the company?s board of directors.
1977
Juanita (LeFlore) Chrysanthou [LibArts, MA ?80] was named vice
president of student services at Truckee Meadows Community College.
Juanita was previously vice president of learning services at
Bakersfield College in California, a predominantly Hispanic
institution with an enrollment of 16,000 students.
1980
Jerry Hizon, MD [SciEng] and Teresa (Romano) Hizon [LibArts] have a
daughter, Megan, currently attending LMU. Megan will be a sophomore
in the 2004-05 academic year.
1983
Lt. Col. Rudy Byrne [BusAdm] graduated from the Air Force Air War
College with a master?s degree in strategic studies. He and his
wife, Laurie [SciEng ?84], are stationed at Little Rock, Ark., with
their children, Jillian (17), Christopher (13), Timothy (9), and
Kaleigh (7). Rudy is the deputy commander of the 314th Operations
Group, teaching aircrews from around the world to fly and employ
the C-130 tactical airlifted.
1982
Dawn Martin [LibArts, JD ?86] is the executive director of Sea Web.
She served in the Environmental Protection Agency during the
Clinton Administration and has been engaged in ocean conversation
work for 15 years.
1984
Brian Heffernan [LibArts] and Stanton Charles Hunton III [LibArts]
have accepted nominations to serve on the Alumni Association Board
of Directors.
Rosemary Turner [BusAdm] received the MLK Woman
of the Year Award for being a philanthropist and a local role model
in corporate America. She is vice president of the Southern
California district of United Parcel Service (UPS) where she
oversees a staff of 6,300 employees and is responsible for the
largest national revenue-generating area for UPS. Rosemary also
serves on the board of directors for Orange County United Way, is a
founding member of Women?s Philanthropy Fund of Orange County, and
is a board member of the Orange County Business Council. Rosemary
says, ?I want to stand for hope for the young and up-and-coming. I
hope that I reflect what Dr. King was trying to do and am always
thinking about how I can give back.?
Lorraine Yglesias [CFA] is a marketing
coordinator for the Monterey Bay Aquarium in the marketing and
guest services department.
1985
Jonathon Aslay [BusAdm] was appointed vice president of
SullivanCurtisMonroe, a California-based insurance
brokerage.
1986
Jerome Carter [BusAdm] has completed the second edition of his
book, Inspiration 52. He also accepted the invitation to serve as
an executive director on the board of the African American Alumni
Association.
1987
Charles Castillo [BusAdm] received the Outstanding Law Day Activity
Award on behalf of the Burlington County (N.J.) Law Day 2003
Committee at an American Bar Association (ABA) meeting in San
Antonio, Tex. The ABA recognized Charles? Law Day program as one of
the Top 5 in the country for expanding the public?s understanding
of the rule of law and appreciation for the positive role law plays
in our society. Charles and his wife, Sarah Operario, are expecting
their second boy, who will join their first child, Charlie. Charles
is the director of regulatory and legal affairs for the New Jersey
Higher Education Student Assistance Authority. His ultimate goal is
to become a Superior Court judge.
1988
Kirsten Goulde [LibArts] is the vice president of human resources
for LivHome, an all-inclusive elder care service provider in
Southern California that offers customized plans for in-home elder
care.
1990
Marcia (Sweet) Wolfe [MBA] married Eric Wolfe in July 2002 and
moved from Los Angeles to the High Desert, where she is chief
financial officer and vice president of Magnum Mfg. Inc. The
company manufactures cutting torches used in land and underwater
applications.
1991
Katie Heagerty Zazueta [CFA] was promoted to vice
president/director of client services at Coakley Heagerty, an
advertising and public relations agency in San Jose, Calif. She was
previously director of client services for the agency.
1993
Kim (Desrosiers) Lowie [LibArts] eloped to Las
Vegas in June with Dwight Lowie. Kim and Dwight reside in Chandler,
Ariz., with their two beagles, Cliff and Bailey. Kim is the
director of technical publications and media for Honeywell
Aerospace.
Stephanie (Kleiman) Younger [LibArts] has
accepted the nomination to serve on the Alumni Association Board of
Directors. Stephanie is also a realtor for Caldwell Banker in
Westchester.
1994
Gina (Sinatra) McConnell [LibArts] and Michael Payne McConnell
[SciEng] live in Irvine, Calif. Gina is a nurse practitioner
working with abused children at the County USC Hospital, and
Michael began a three-year fellowship in reconstructive and plastic
surgery at the University of California, Irvine, in July. They have
been blessed with a new addition to their family, Ava Irene, who
was born in May.
Nina Sadaghiani Neumann [SciEng] and her husband,
Steffen, bought a house in Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif. Their
daughter, Katarina, is 2.
Darryl Street [BusAdm, MBA ?01] was promoted to
assistant vice president at Fieldman, Rolapp & Associates in
Irvine, Calif. Darryl joined the firm after earning his MBA. In his
current position, he advises state and local governments, as well
as nonprofit organizations, in all aspects of municipal
finance.
1995
Ernest Henderson [BusAdm] is the owner of a new Cold Stone Creamery
in Baldwin Hills, Calif. Ernest also serves as an executive
director on the board of the African American Alumni
Association.
1996
James Keane, SJ [LibArts] took his first vows in the Society of
Jesus in August in LMU?s Sacred Heart Chapel. He spent the past
year working at an AIDS hospice in Pacifica, Calif., and at the
Jesuit magazine America in New York City. He will be stationed for
the next three years at Fordham University in New York.
Matthew Parlow [LibArts] has accepted the
nomination to serve on the Alumni Association Board of
Directors.
1997
Kent Jancarik [LibArts] relocated to London in June to work for
Biogen Idec?s European headquarters. For the past three years, he
was employed at the cancer drug company?s La Jolla-based R&D
site. In his new role, Kent devises pan-European regulatory
strategies for the oncology and immunology pipeline. He completed a
graduate degree from the USC School of Pharmacy in 2003.
Kathleen Keane [LibArts, MA ?04] is a school
teacher in Manhattan Beach, Calif., and lives with her, husband,
Geoff Brown [BusAdm ?00], in Hermosa Beach.
Gloria Michel [LibArts] graduated from the
Southern California Leadership Network program (SCLN). The mission
of SCLN is to develop and sustain a proactive network of exemplary
leaders in the business, government, and community sectors to take
on the critical challenges facing the Southern California
region.
1998
Patricia Branconier [SciEng] married Chris Habash [BusAdm ?99] in
July 2003. The couple lives in Covina, Calif., and welcomed twin
boys in May 2004.
Wil Castillo [CFA] produced the independent film,
Running Springs, a realistic story about relationships, people, and
the gray areas of life. The movie is showcased online at
www.runningspringsthemovie.com.
Glenn Milus Jr. [BusAdm] and his business partner
were the West Coast winners of Miller Brewing Co.?s Urban Business
Competition. The two were flown to Miller?s Milwaukee headquarters
to receive the award on behalf of their business, MindLab
Inc.
1999
Ted Kroeber [CFA] is producing the independent film American Gun,
written by Aric Avelino [CFA]. Forest Whitaker has signed on to
star in the film and serve as executive producer through his Spirit
Dance production banner IFC Films. Donald Sutherland and Linda
Cardellini [CFA ?97] will also star in the film, which explores a
series of interwoven stories about how the proliferation of guns in
American affects and shapes lives.
2000
Joey Aucoin [CFA] wrote the film, K Thru 12, a romantic comedy
described as a teen version of When Harry Met Sally. Vertigo
Entertainment is producing the film.
Geoff Brown [BusAdm] is a computer programmer for
Toyota in Hermosa Beach, Calif., and is married to Kathleen Keane
[LibArts ?97].
Yoshado Lang [LibArts] is pursing a PhD in
psychology and passed his final orals exam/dissertation defense.
All that remains is his full-time internship.
Cliff Lim [BusAdm] helped coordinate and host a
Hollywood Alumni Happy Hour mixer at Hollywood Billiards in July.
The LMU Alumni Association thanks Cliff for his efforts.
Ryan Rillorta [BusAdm] was promoted to audit
manager at Ernst & Young.
Lisa Weeks [LibArts] joined Southern Starz Inc.,
a wine importing, distribution, and retail company in Huntington
Beach, Calif. For the past two years, she was the reader services
editor at Bon Appetit magazine in LA. In her new position as
marketing manager, Lisa will provide marketing, public relations,
and sales support to a portfolio of wines from Australia, New
Zealand, and South Africa. Lisa lives in Playa Del Rey.
2001
David Escobar [BusAdm] married Sarah Norton [CFA ?03] this August
in Laguna Beach, Calif. They live in the Hollywood
Hills.
Kristin Firestone [LibArts] is campus ministry
director at Chaminade College Preparatory High School in West
Hills, Calif. Since graduation, Kristin has served as coordinator
of youth ministry at St. Bernardine of Siena Parish in Woodland
Hills. Kristin looks forward to greater professional, spiritual,
and personal growth as she continues to share her LMU
education.
Teresa Heagerty [CFA] joined Coakley Heagerty,
her family?s advertising and public relations agency in San Jose,
as an account executive. The agency?s clients include The Irvine
Company, Standard Pacific Homes, and Santa Clara County Parks and
Recreation.
Brent Wood [CFA] helped coordinate and host a
Hollywood Alumni Happy Hour mixer at Hollywood Billiards in July.
The LMU Alumni Association thanks Brent for his efforts.
2002
Thomas Huang [MFA] is the director/writer of Freshmen, an
independent film now available on DVD.
Stephanie (Matson) Taylor [MBA] is the special
events manager for the American Cancer Society, Orange County,
Calif. Stephanie and her husband, Jason, bought their first home in
Aliso Viejo.
Michael Zellner [MBA] is Sony?s account
representative for international TV services in Asia.
2003
Michael Artifon [LibArts] earned his navigator wings from the
United States Air Force. He will be based in Omaha, Neb., where he
will be flying the RC-135 as an electronic warfare
officer.
Winesha Whitehead [LibArts] accepted a position
as financial aid counselor in LMU?s Financial Aid
Office.
2004
Edward Felix [LibArts] graduated from LMU 54 years after dropping
out of college to take care of his family. Eddie and his wife, Kay,
raised six children, and he retired in 1994 from his work as a vice
president for an electrical wholesaler.
Emily Ravenscroft [CFA] worked as an intern in
Washington, D.C., this summer and is beginning graduate school in
Chapel Hill, N.C., this fall. Emily met with Congresswoman Zoe
Lofgren over the summer to ask for support and assistance in
helping end human rights abuses in this country. Emily also had
breakfast with Sen. Diane Feinstein and Pamela Aall, the head of
the Education Unit of the United States Institute of
Peace.
