Ignatians
A commitment to service and fun!

Prayer of St. Ignatius of Loyola
HISTORY
- Named after St. Ignatius of Loyola, author of The Spiritual Exercises and the founder of the Society of Jesus, the Ignatians were founded at Loyola Marymount University in 1981. The Ignatians were the first service organization to form after the merger of Loyola University and Marymount College.
- The Ignatians were also the first co-educational service organization of the University. Belles, Crimson Circle and Gryphon Circle were single-sex organizations serving in specific areas of the University. While Belles and Crimson Circle experimented with including a member of the opposite sex in their organization, both organizations decided to remain single-sex. The Ignatians were established to meet the need for a co-educational service organization as well as a service organization that was inclusive of commuter students and students of racial minority communities.
- The Ignatians were founded to perform service to the LMU Community as well as off-campus related functions. They were also founded to complement the existing service groups and to meet the needs in the athletic and fine arts departments, the Justice Issues Program, and the library, as well as assisting the other service organizations when requested.
- Fran Williams served as the first moderator of the Ignatians and Father Clancey Wallen, SJ, served as chaplain for 18 years. Sr. Mary Beth Ingham, CSJ, served as moderator and chaplain of The Ignatians from 1986 to 2007.
- The Ignatians share a history and tradition with the Jesuit Community and the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange

2010 Off-Campus Service Programs
- 186th St. School and Peace Games: 186th St. School heavily promotes the message of peace. Ignatians play games and build relationships with the kids in the after school programs there.
- Friends of Animals: Friends of Animals is a safe home for orphaned and abandoned cats and dogs. We spend time with the animals and help clean their cages.
- Guadalupe Homeless Project: GHP is a part of the Dolores Mission in East LA. It is a shelter for immigrant men to stay for 90 days, providing breakfast and dinner, help in finding jobs and services such as references, transportation, English classes and various workshops. We spend time with these men, creating relationships and helping them get acclimated to their new life.
- St. Joseph’s: St. Joseph’s is a program that organizes grocery deliveries to those unable to get the necessities themselves. More importantly, it allows us to talk with and create relationships with these individuals that may not be able to seek them out on their own.
- St. Margaret Mary's: St. Margaret Mary’s is a Church in Lomita, CA. They run a program that puts together hundred of bag lunches each Sunday, and delivers them to the homeless in the LA area.
- Westchester and Beach Clean Up: It’s our way of creating a good relationship with the community of Westchester by cleaning up the streets once a week. We also do a beach clean up at Dockweiler once a month.
SPECIAL PROJECTSEach Semester the Ignatians take part in a service project which most of our fundraising funds go towards. In the Spring of 2009 we raised money for a school for girls established by LMU’s Professor Jok in Africa. And every Fall, Ignatians teams up with Underwings Praxis for the Fiesta De Navidad at the Dolores Mission. The Fiesta involves compiling gifts for the men staying at the shelter and sharing a night with the East LA community of the Dolores Mission.
Fun Facts
- The uniform colors of the Ignatians are burgundy, gray and black.
- We frequently partake in friendly competitions with our rival/best friend co-ed service organization, Sursum Corda. We’ve been known to play a game or two of capture the flag and broomball.
- Part of our On Campus Service that is unique to Ignatians is our Random Acts of Kindness (RAOKs for short). RAOK’s are our way of trying to spread joy throughout the LMU community. They can be anything from leaving happy notes in classrooms to giving out free hugs. Anything to assist in the raising of the LMU campus’ spirits.
